Sri Ranganathachariar, known as Nammalvar, is one of the most eminent exponents of the sacred literature of Tamil Nadu. The much beloved Thirukkural, composed by the great poet Thiruvalluvar, is the best known work composed by him. The Thirukkural is the basic text that most Tamil-speaking people will call "the Tamil Bible." In the preamble of his commentary on the Thirukkural, Nammalvar begins by saying, "My description of the Thirukkural is the same as that of the original poet." According to the tradition, the Thirukkural was composed by another illustrious poet who used to teach the Thirukkural to his students. Nammalvar follows and gives a description of the Thirukkural. The Thirukkural has two distinct editions. The First Edition was composed by either the original author of the Thirukkural or someone else who used to give the Thirukkural to the original author. The Second Edition was composed by the great poet Nammalvar himself. This commentary is very comprehensive and complete. The First Edition provides the reference material; the Second Edition clarifies the problems and gives a contextual meaning for each verse of the Thirukkural. It is the second edition that should be read as the original commentary on the Thirukkural. The commentary written by Nammalvar is a book that will certainly prove to be a boon for many readers, as he has grasped the finer nuances of the Thirukkural and has directed much of his commentary towards answering questions posed by his students.
