this book indian architecture: (buddhist and hindu periods) written by brown, percy is the first major publication on early indian architecture to draw on the wealth of material from the first systematic survey of the salt range monuments that has been conducted since the 1920s (archaeology and architecture in early historic pakistan, 1966-68). it hopes to contribute to the understanding of the historical and religious significance of those sites, and to the development of a new body of knowledge and wisdom regarding the rise of the new indo-gandhara civilization, and the structure of its institutions.

the textual information available is fragmentary, but it is worth noting that sanskrit literature from the area includes the rajatala mala, a chronicle of buddhist kings of kashmir, or the yajur veda to the gandhara area, and the sanskrit text kaushitaki upanishad, where the overlord utpalas are credited with building one of the temples at malot (rehman 1979).

gandhara was an important site for buddhism at this time, especially within the kushan empire (klostermaier). ancient gandhara was nominally part of the kushan province of oryadapantaka, which is represented in epigraphy in the area around gorno-badakhshan, but by the time of the kushana kumarasena in the second half of the 1st century ad, cultural and administrative links between the two became stronger (cohen 1989). the kushan period of india is also marked by a development in the art of building stone temples to a standardization which was not apparent in earlier periods. 84d34552a1
