HTML to Speech

Convert HTML to a readable string. To make your web page content readable you need to convert it to the readable string. Using simply textNode or innerText isn't sufficient as there are other elements that needs to be processed: images, form controls, etc.

The additional challenges:

  • Punctuation. Sentences needs to be split with dot at the end. So, "someexample" needs to be represented by "some.example" because reader will make a pause on "." as well as senteces should be read separately.

Getting started

  1. First download the package:
npm install @sitelintcode/html-to-speech --save
  1. Usage:
  import HtmlToSpeech from '@sitelint/html-to-speech';

  const htmlToSpeech: HtmlToSpeech = new HtmlToSpeech();

  const stringToRead: string = htmlToSpeech.convert(source: Element | Element[] | string, excludeElements: HTMLElement | HTMLElement[]);

Technical

  1. import { terser } from "rollup-plugin-terser"; was replaced with import { terser } from "rollup-plugin-minification"; because rollup-plugin-terser is not compatible with Rollup 3.x version. See: https://github.com/TrySound/rollup-plugin-terser/issues/119
