red-socket

Summary

Attempt to write a module that wraps Redis Pub/Sub around socket.io to emit messages to more than one node.js instance

Installation

Through npm:

npm install red-socket

Through github:

git clone git@github.com:JeromeParadis/red-socket.git

Usage

See Chat Example

var io = require('socket.io').listen(80),
    RedSocket = require('red-socket');

var rsr = RedSocket(io,options);

Then, you can use:

rsr.on("connection")

instead of

io.sockets.on("connection")

to wrap your socket code. Then, to wrap calls through pub-sub and dispatch to all sockets, you can use:

socket.r_broadcast_emit()
rsr.r_emit()

instead of

socket.r_broadcast_emit()
socket.emit()

Redis sets helper:

As a convenience, red-socket defines an helper to manage redis sets. Can be useful to use as a datastore instead of using a local array that wouldn't be shared between instances.

All methods can support a facultative callback with a boolean parameter that returns success or failure except for get_members that returns an array of the set members.

var nicknames = new rsr.Sets("nicknames");

gives you:

nicknames.add(value,unique,callback) // Add a value to the set

unique is a boolean

nickname.delete(value,callback) // Delete a value from the set
nickname.delete_set()                  // Destroy the set
nickname.get_members(callback)

Options

TODO:

  • Redis Sets store: add volatility and/or keep track per process and delete on process lost
  • ... maybe some kind of process ping to keep sets active?
  • Add haproxy chat example to show multiple process running
  • Add tests
  • Add benchmarks
  • Documentation
  • Clean up code using async
