medusa-events-webhooks

medusa-events-webhooks is a plugin for Medusa.js that allows you to call webhooks on various events such as order, order-edit, payment, customer, and cart. This plugin is designed to make it easy to register webhook URLs and handle event-driven actions in your Medusa.js projects.

Features

  • Webhook Registration: Register webhook URLs to listen for specific events.
  • Event Handling: Automatically trigger webhooks on specific events related to orders, order edits, payments, customers, and carts.
  • Type Definitions: Provides type definitions for the data passed in webhook bodies.

Installation

Install the plugin using npm:

npm install medusa-events-webhooks

Plugin Options

Add options for access secret and retry count in medusa-config.js

  {
    resolve: `medusa-events-webhooks`,
    options: {
      enableUI: true,
      TOKEN_SECRET: process.env.TOKEN_SECRET,
      MAX_RETRY_COUNT: process.env.MAX_RETRY_COUNT,
    },
  }

Migrations

npx medusa migrations run

Usage

Registering Webhooks

To add a webhook using the webhook events screen in the Medusa admin dashboard, follow these steps:

1. Add a Webhook
  • Use the webhook events screen in the admin dashboard to add a new webhook.
  • Upon creation, an access key will be generated.
  • This access key should be included in the headers of each webhook request.
2. Edit and Save Events
  • After creating the webhook, edit the events you want to trigger the webhook.
  • Save the selected events to ensure the webhook triggers correctly.
3. Active Flag
  • The active flag controls whether the webhook should be called.
  • Ensure this flag is set to true to enable webhook calls.
or

Send a POST request to /custom/register-webhook with the following body:

{
  "webhook_url": "string",
  "event_types": ["string"]
}
  • webhook_url: The URL that will receive the webhook calls.
  • event_types: An array of event types you want to listen for.
Example Request
curl -X POST http://your-medusa-server.com/custom/register-webhook \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
  "webhook_url": "https://your-webhook-url.com",
  "event_types": ["order.placed", "order.updated"]
}'

Webhook Payload

Webhook calls will be made as POST requests with the following body structure:

{
  "event": "string",
  "data": "type dependent"
}
  • event: The event that triggered the webhook.
  • data: The data associated with the event. The structure of this data will depend on the event type.

headers would contain the api key as :

{
  "X-API-KEY" : string
}

Types

You can refer to the provided types file for the structure of the data being passed in the webhook bodies. This file will help you understand the expected data format for different event types.

Example Webhook Handler

Below is an example of how you might handle incoming webhook requests in your server:

const express = require('express');
const app = express();

app.use(express.json());

app.post('/webhook-handler', (req, res) => {
  const { event, data } = req.body;

  switch (event) {
    case 'order.created':
      handleOrderCreated(data);
      break;
    case 'payment.completed':
      handlePaymentCompleted(data);
      break;
    // handle other events
    default:
      console.log(`Unhandled event: ${event}`);
  }

  res.status(200).send('Webhook received');
});

function handleOrderCreated(orderData) {
  // Process order created event
  console.log('Order created:', orderData);
}

function handlePaymentCompleted(paymentData) {
  // Process payment completed event
  console.log('Payment completed:', paymentData);
}

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server is running on port 3000');
});
