grunt-browserify2

a grunt task that uses browserify v2 and optionally express

Getting Started

This plugin requires Grunt ~0.4.1

If you haven't used Grunt before, be sure to check out the Getting Started guide, as it explains how to create a Gruntfile as well as install and use Grunt plugins. Once you're familiar with that process, you may install this plugin with this command:

npm install grunt-browserify2 --save-dev

One the plugin has been installed, it may be enabled inside your Gruntfile with this line of JavaScript:

grunt.loadNpmTasks('grunt-browserify2');

The "browserify2" task

Overview

In your project's Gruntfile, add a section named browserify2 to the data object passed into grunt.initConfig(). This task is a now a MultiTask, which means it can run different tasks based on a namespace. ex:

  browserify2: {
    dev: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      mount: '/application.js',
      server: './build/server.js',
      debug: true
    },
    compile: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      compile: './public/application.js'
    }
  }
});
grunt.loadNpmTasks('grunt-browserify2');
grunt.registerTask('default', 'browserify2:dev');
grunt.registerTask('compile', 'browserify2:compile');

running grunt will start your dev server and running grunt compile will compile the build

Options

entry

Type: String Default value: '.'

A string value that is used to determine the entry file for browserify

mount

Type: String Default value: '.'

A string value that is used to determine where to mount your file in express.

compile

Type: String Default value: '.'

A string value that is used to determine where to save your output file from browserify. if the server option is specified then it will create an express server and compile the file.

beforeHook

Type: Function Default value: noop

A function that gets called with the browserify bundle. This is where you should be using the new plugins for browserify v2.

Example:

grunt.initConfig({
  browserify2: {
    main: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      compile: './public/application.js',
      beforeHook: function(bundle){
        bundle.transform(handleify)
      }
    }
  }
});
 

browserify-shim Example:

grunt.initConfig({
  browserify2: {
    main: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      compile: './public/application.js',
      beforeHook: function(bundle){
        shim(bundle, {zepto: path: './vendor/zepto', exports: 'Zepto'});
      }
    }
  }
});

afterHook

Type: Function Default value: noop

A function that gets called with the browserify src. This is where you should be using minifiers etc.

Example:

grunt.initConfig({
  browserify2: {
    dev: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      mount: '/application.js',
      server: './build/server.js',
      debug: true
    }
    compile: {
      entry: './build/entry.js',
      compile: './public/application.js',
      afterHook: function(src){
        var result = uglify.minify(src, {fromString: true});
        return result.code;
      }
    }
  }
})

expose

Type: Object Default value: {}

An object whose keys will become requireable module names mapped to their values.

Example:

expose: {
  angular: './libs/angular/angular.js',
  _: './libs/underscore.js'
}

This allows you to use require('angular') and require('_') in your modules, rather than having to provide the relative paths.

expose.files

Type: Array Default value: []

An array of file patterns that will be passed to grunt.file.expandMapping() to expose sets of files as simplified names/paths.

Example:

expose: {
  files: [
   {
            cwd: './vendor/',
            src: ['**/*.js']
        }
    ]
}

This would expose all .js files within the vendor directory, at any level, for requireing by name.

vendor/angular/angular.js becomes require('angular'), vendor/underscore.js becomes require('underscore'), etc.

Each object in the files array must specify cwd and src properties, while dest is optional. For example, adding dest: 'lib/' to the above would enable require("lib/angular")

debug

Type: Boolean Default value: false

A boolean value that determines whether to include source maps for debugging

Contributing

In lieu of a formal styleguide, take care to maintain the existing coding style. Add unit tests for any new or changed functionality. Lint and test your code using Grunt.
