avs-rpc: a node.js RPC library

Usage

Side A needs side B to do some stuff...

Side A

First, create an RPC object from the library. Use its remote method to create a remote object and declare its remote methods. Then use the remote object.

Side B

Obviously, we need a function to implement the getUserProfile requested on side A.

We need now to make this function available to side A. This is done by creating an object to hold the interface (to the functions to publish), and by linking this object to the side B rpc object.

From then, remote.getUserProfile(...) on side A will trigger getUserProfile on side B and value returned by side B will be sent back to side A.

Transport

The rpc objects we created on both sides expect that we define a way to transport the information from one side to the other. The simplest way to do that is to use the out method of the rpc object.

sideB.out(function(msg) { sideA.process(msg); });

However, it is rather meant to be used with network transport. Next section describes how to use avs-rpc with socket.io.

socket.io

The avs-rpc package supports the socket.io library through the ioRpc class (cf. socket.io).

Below is a complete example.

Browser

The UMD bundle name of the minified library is avs. To use a RPC class from the library, the name of the class is prefixed with avs.

Example:

socket = io('http://localhost:4141');
rpc = new avs.ioRpc(socket);

Miscellaneous

  1. avs-rpc accepts passing any number of arguments to the remote object. If a callback is needed, the callback must be the last (or the only one) argument (see example above).

  2. The local object in the example may be used to publish several functions, e.g.:

  1. Local functions can be synchronous, meaning that the value returned is implicitly sent back to the caller, or asynchronous. For asynchronous functions, a callback is provided by avs-rpc so that the function result can be sent back to the caller. Asynchronous functions spare sending back results which are not needed since no value is returned if no callback is provided on side A.

Example: use of implementAsync

Error handling

rpc callbacks receive two arguments: a return value and an error value (result, error). If the error value is not undefined, it contains the error message and in this case the return value is undefined (see first example on top of the page).

socketcluster.io

The avs-rpc package supports the SocketCluster library through the scRpc class (cf. socketcluster.io). The only difference is in the error handling. SocketCluster expects a callback where the error is the first parameter: (error, result)

APIs

Main APIs

rpc.remote(methods)

Returns a new remote object implementing the methods. The methods can be a string or an array of strings (see example on top of the page).

rpc.implement(local, methods)

Publish the methods of the object local. Those methods are now available to the rpc object. If methods is omitted all the methods of local are published, but the ones which begin with '_' (aka private methods). methods can be a single string or several strings (and even an array of strings). The methods are synchronous: the value they returned is sent back.

rpc.implementAsync(local, methods)

Same as implement but the methods are asynchronous: a callback is passed to these methods to sent back results.

Secondary APIs

rpc.out(send) 

Tells the rpc object how to send messages. This is used implicitly by the ioRpc class (so there's nothing to do). send is a function that takes 2 parameters which are the 2 formats of the message to send: as a JSON object and as a stringified object.

rpc.process(message)

Sends the rpc object a rpc message to process (on side B, execute local function, on side A executes callback). This is to be called when a message is received by the transport mechanism. message can be a message object or its stringified form. This is used also implicitly by the ioRpc class.
